Bloods’ women’s mentor Shane Moon unsure if he will reclaim the top job next year

West Adelaide is casting a wide open net in its search for the right person to coach the club’s women’s team in 2019.

West Adelaide could have a new women’s senior coach as the club opens up applications for the top job.

Shane Moon, who held the reins this season, was unsure if he would have the time to fulfil the role’s expectations next year.

Moon, also a part-time recruiter for St Kilda, said the SANFL was likely to extend the women’s season in 2020 and that would not fit in with his work schedule.

Moon took over the reins from Bloods football manager Andrew Marks this season and led West to a fifth-place finish with a 6-4 record.

“We haven’t necessarily parted ways as yet but we’ve done a review and they (West) are just going to market,” Moon said.

“I had a one-year contract and they’ve encouraged me to apply but whether I do or not, I’ll wait and see.

“At this stage there is talk about lengthening the season, so it’s just where that goes and when that confirmation is.

“It may be that I have to make a decision between one job or the other and I’ve just got to work through things.”

The Bloods were in a battle with Glenelg to snatch fourth-place and a finals appearance this season.

But they lost their final minor round to eventual premiers South Adelaide and the Tigers beat Woodville-West Torrens.

Moon enjoyed being at the helm but was disappointed West failed to earn a finals berth.

Should he return to the role, he would focus on recruiting players with “a bit more height and speed”.

Marks said the club was “more than happy for Moon to re-apply”.

“We are looking for someone to develop players and we’d like to play some finals,” Marks said.

Applications close July 19.

Sturt and Norwood are also searching for new women’s coaches.

Double Blues mentor Danijel Herbut stepped down last week, citing time constraints.

Ex-Redlegs coach Steve Symonds was appointed senior coach of Collingwood’s AFLW team in May.

The Bloods hope to announce a new coach by the end of the month.

A SANFL spokeswoman said the league was “looking at options for next season before making any recommendations to the SA Football Commission”.

Any changes to the season duration would have to be approved by the Commission.
