Bek Rasheed, daughter of North Adelaide games record holder Mick Redden, to line up with Roosters this SANFLW season

Bek Rasheed, daughter of North Adelaide club great and games record holder Mick Redden, has eyes on following in her father’s footsteps in the SANFLW with the Roosters.

Growing up, Bek Rasheed was an eager footy watcher and statistician.

She did not mind the 278km drive from the family’s Pekina farm in the state’s Mid North to watch her father, North Adelaide games record holder Mick Redden, line up with the Roosters.

Now, more than two decades later, Rasheed hopes to create new memories at Prospect Oval – when she lines up this season with North Adelaide in the SANFLW.

“Mum would pack us all up and we would come to Adelaide to watch Dad play,” Rasheed, 38, says.

“I liked to watch quite intently, take stats and chat about the game afterwards.

“That was probably the first 12 years of my life, because Dad was still playing.

“I have a lot of memories – mainly of Darel Hart and some of those players squirting us with water out of the windows of the changerooms. I will always remember being in the clubrooms after the games and having a kick with all the players.

“It’s just exciting that (North) is the club I’ll hopefully get a game at it.

“It would be pretty great to run out onto Prospect Oval.”

Redden enjoyed an illustrious career at the Roosters.

The now 62-year-old set the club record with 379 games for North and was a dual premiership player (1987, 1991).

His state career was just as distinguished. He represented the state 11 times, won a Fos Williams Medal in 1988 and captained SA in 1991.

Now, he will support his daughter as she runs out in the Roosters’ red-and-white guernsey.

“When she was invited to go down and train, I knew she was keen,” says Redden, who still lives on the Pekina farm.

“It’s pretty special.

“Bek was always interested in football and from the time she was old enough to walk she was kicking the football in the backyard with me, and then when her brother was born.

“Helen (Redden’s late wife) was a very keen football follower and she made sure the kids came to a lot of games.

“I’ve got the program and identified a couple of double-headers with the men, so I’ll be out there.”

Rasheed, a mother-of-three, owns a sheep and cattle farm in Orroroo with her husband, Jon, so will return to the three hours-plus travel schedule for training and games.
