The SA Premier League basketball season is heating up but Woodville doused the Flames on Saturday night in the upset of the year so far.
Messenger Community News has all the action from round six.
WARRIORS DOUSE FLAMES
Woodville produced the upset of the men’s Premier League basketball season by downing previously undefeated Norwood at St Clair on Saturday night.
The Warriors came in as significant underdogs against the 6-0 Flames but used a 33-point second quarter to launch to a 106-97 victory.
Woodville coach Scott Whitmore hoped the win would be a catalyst to spark more success this season.
“We knew we had that in us,” Whitmore said. “It’s great for the guys to get some reward for effort and now hopefully we can push on.
“It’s a mindset thing now, we need to beat the teams below us as well.
“We’ve got Sturt this Saturday and after the game I wrote ‘Sturt’ on the whiteboard because we need to shift our focus now. We don’t want to be their first win.”
Alex Maiorana had 23 points and 15 rebounds in a strong captain’s performance, while Jonathan Perry topscored with 24 points and Riley Meldrum recorded 20.
The Warriors jumped the Flames to have a five-point lead at quarter-time before shooting the lights out in a 33-25 second period.
Brandon Brine led the scoring for the visitors, finishing with 36 points, 17 rebounds and two assists.
Ex-West import James Legan recorded 18 points, three boards and dished off three assists.
Matthew Lycett (16 points) and Matthew Webber (14) were the only other Flames players to hit double figures.
In women’s action, Woodville went down 85-76 to the Flames and moved to a 3-3 record. Sherrie Session topscored for the Warriors with 22 points.
SPENCER LEADS WEST TO WIN
West Adelaide edged closer to the top of the women’s Premier League basketball table with a strong win over Forestville at Port Adelaide on Saturday night.
The Bearcats led at every change in the 94-75 victory over last season’s runners-up.
Ashleigh Spencer dominated with 27 points and seven rebounds but West’s bench was the catalyst in the victory, outscoring the Eagles’ reserves 42-25.
Tahlia (14 points) and Jasmin Fejo (13) were solid, while Hajnal Nagy did not get on the scoresheet but battled hard to pull in 11 rebounds. The Bearcats are third on the ladder.
A disappointing second quarter cost West’s men dearly in a 89-76 loss to Forestville, despite holding the Eagles to their lowest score of the season.
The Bearcats trailed by one point at the first break but were shut down in a 21-10 second term by the ladder leading Eagles.
Tom Kubank had 26 points to top score for West. Bryan Jefferson recorded 19 points an 11 boards.
The Bearcats are fourth on the ladder with a 3-3 record.
West does not have a game this Saturday night but takes on the Southern Tigers at Morphett Vale on Thursday, April 18.
TURN IT UP CJ
CJ Turnage had 29 points and 18 rebounds to drag Southern Tigers to a hard-fought 84-74 win away to Central Districts in men’s Premier League basketball on Saturday night.
The Tigers shot out to a 25-19 lead at quarter time and edged the Lions in every term.
Isaiah Omamogho had 19 points and captain Sam Johns recorded 14 and nine rebounds for Southern.
Apiok Dau top scored for Central with 20 points.
The defending champions are now equal-sixth on the ladder.
In women’s action, Southern moved to a 2-3 record after downing Central for the second time this season.
The Tigers prevailed 91-70 as Jemma Thacker topscored with 25 points.
Jazmen Boone played a lone hand at times for the Lions as she scored 29 points and pulled in eight rebounds.
PANTHERS RUN COLD AT THE ICE HOUSE
South Adelaide’s men were no match for Mount Gambier in their men’s Premier League basketball clash at the Ice House on Saturday night.
Scores were level at 22 apiece at quarter-time before the Pioneers outscored the winless visitors in the next three periods on their way to a 84-121 thumping.
It was a split effort from Mount Gambier, with Tom Daly (27 points), DayJar Dickson (22), Sam Daly (20) and Kentrell Barkley (18 and 18 rebounds) all contributing.
The Pioneers smashed the Panthers in the paint, 82-46.
South’s women fell 60-74 to Mount Gambier. Brianti Saunders (21 points) topscored for the Panthers.
NORTH EDGE EASTERN
North Adelaide narrowly won its men’s clash with Eastern Mavericks 109-102 at Hillcrest.
Ex-West Adelaide import Tobias Dowdell topscored with 29 points for the Rockets, during the clash while also amassing 17 boards.
