An Adelaide Footy League club is mourning the loss of a player who died during training on Tuesday night.

Adelaide Lutheran Football Club premiership player Josh Henty-Smith collapsed during the warm-up at a pre-season session.

A statement from Adelaide Lutheran said club officials and players provided treatment to the 25-year-old until the ambulance and paramedics arrived, and that the club was “immensely proud of the attempts they made to save his life”.

He was then transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he later died.

Henty-Smith played 96 games for the division seven club, including the past three B grade premierships, and kicked 130 goals.

“We remember fondly his late goal in round nine against Greenacres last year where he proved just how clever and difficult to defend he was,” the club statement continued.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his partner Laura, parents Dave and Julia and sister Millie.

“As a club we are working through the Adelaide Footy League and relevant support agencies to provide the support that is required at this difficult time.

“The club was appreciative of the attendance and supportive words to Josh’s teammates at the clubrooms last night by Lutheran pastors and the paramedics involved.”

Adelaide Footy League chief executive John Kernahan said the league was “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by the tragedy.

“On behalf of the entire Adelaide Footy community, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the Henty-Smith family as they grieve for their son, partner and brother Josh,” he said.

“Like everyone, we are absolutely devastated and heartbroken at the tragic loss of Josh.

“At this difficult time, our thoughts our also with Josh’s club mates from the Adelaide Lutheran Sports Club.

“We ask that the Henty-Smith family and members of the Adelaide Lutheran Sports Club be allowed to grieve in peace and would ask that the media respect their privacy.”
