DIVISION ONE

Prince Alfred Old Collegians coach was happy with how his “under the pump” side came to play against Payneham Norwood Union at home on Saturday.

The Old Reds sat just outside the relegation zone heading in, but is now just a win and percentage out of finals after emerging 15.13 (103) to 6.12 (48) victors.

“We’re very pleased with the win,” Pitt said.

“Obviously we’ve been a bit under the pump and it was a big game for us because we want to play finals so we had to win it.”

The visiting Falcons came out of the blocks fastest in the affair to lead 11-22 at the first break, but Princes cleaned up their inefficient play and turnovers in the second term and gained the ascendancy soon enough.

Chris Curran led by example in defence, while Jack Trengove and Hayden Jolly were dominant through the middle.

Captain Lachlan McNamara was also instrumental.

“We didn’t need to change anything structurally after quarter-time, it was just about realising we were getting too carried away and over-excited and needed to simplify things,” Pitt said.

“You invite pressure when you fumble and turn it over so I was glad we could rectify that pretty quickly.

“Our backline really stood up under pressure and our players through the middle were great when we needed them to be too.”

The win now opens up an avenue to finals for the Old Reds, who were in the relegation zone just two games ago.

Pitt said the club was ready for the challenge.

“We’re still really keen to play finals and we know it’s also really close down the bottom too so we just need to keep going through the process and keep getting wins on the board,” he said.

“Old Ignatians this weekend will be a big test for us which I’m looking forward to.”
