A hard-fought encounter between old rivals Adelaide Blue Eagles and Adelaide City resulted in three red cards and at least 15 yellows shown in a 1-1 draw at Marden on Monday night.

Blue Eagles coach Vojo Gluscevic was left frustrated with the amount of fouls and cards handed out, which he said affected the flow of the match.

“Over 15 yellow cards and three reds, for me that’s not good for soccer, for these young players,” said Gluscevic, who also received a yellow card for questioning the referee.

“If you want to control the game you need to do it in a different way.

“It was very frustrating.

“When the referee starts cutting the game up it stops it becoming a game.

“Some of the yellows you can’t complain but some, in my opinion, should not have been yellow cards.”

ABE recruit Yohei Matsumoto scored for the second game in a row after converting from the penalty spot five minutes in.

But his captain, Christopher Annicchiarico, was the first to receive his marching orders when he received a second yellow card in the 35th minute.

Adriano Pellegrino then nicked a goal back for City after a deflected shot found the back of the net two minutes later.

Black and Whites defender Zakariah Waters received a second yellow in the 74th for kicking the ball away after the whistle had been blown and City’s Aladin Irabona saw a late red for a high boot on ABE’s Alemayo Kebede.

Gluscevic said the draw was a fair result, although he rued conceding the equaliser from a heavy deflection.

“I’m disappointed with the way we conceded,” he said.

“We had opportunities, Adelaide City had opportunities and it is always a good Italian derby.

“Last week against Campbelltown we played well ... this week we’ve scored early and controlled the game.

“There’s no pressure, the boys are playing well and there are still three, four boys to come back into the team.”

Blue Eagles take on Raiders next Monday night, while Adelaide City is away to MetroStars.

CUMBERLAND UNITED 0

METROSTARS 8

Cumberland United’s return season to Premier League soccer is shaping as a long year after it suffered an 0-8 demolition at the hands of MetroStars on Saturday.

The Foxes conceded two goals from outside the box prior to the break at A.A Bailey Reserve before the visitors piled on six in the second half.

It follows a 0-3 defeat to Adelaide City in the opening round, leaving Cumberland at the foot of the table.

MetroStars coach Rob Saraceno meanwhile was delighted with the way his team bounced back after a 0-3 loss in the opening round.

“We were very disappointed with our performance last week so to bounce back the way we did was very pleasing,” Saraceno said.

“It was a great team performance.

“I was particularly happy for Luis Benedetti who scored a brilliant goal in his first senior game for the club.”

Christian Esposito bagged a hat-trick, Josh Mori hit twice while Benedetti, Dylan Smith and Fabian Barbiero all found the back of the net.

RAIDERS 0

CAMPBELLTOWN CITY 0

Campbelltown City coach Phil Stubbins rued his team’s inability to convert after creating plenty of chances in a 0-0 draw away to Raiders on Friday night.

“It was frustrating that we didn’t get the win as we deserved to take home the three points … we were the better side and created a lot chances,” Stubbins said.

“There were some good positives to take out of the result though, we played well and we kept a clean sheet on the road against a quality opposition.”

“We just have to get better at taking our opportunities and we will work hard on the track this

week and look forward to a big game on Friday night with Croydon Kings.”

MODBURY JETS 2

PARA HILLS 1

Newly promoted Modbury Jets continued their dream start with a 2-1 victory over Para Hills at Modbury on Saturday.

A cagey first half had an injection of life when Sam Altundag opened the scoring for the Knights just before the break.

But when Para Hills’ Logan Marley-Mcfall was handed his second yellow card in the 74th minute for a rash challenge it sparked the hosts into action.

Shaun McGreevy got his head on the ensuing free kick for the equaliser and it was suddenly 2-1 to Modbury three minutes later when Daniel Pritchard put the ball away from close range following a corner.

Para Hills youngster Isaac Mullen was also given his marching orders in stoppage time as the newly-promoted Jets saw out their second-straight victory to begin the campaign.

ADELAIDE OLYMPIC 0

ADELAIDE COMETS 1

Adelaide Olympic coach George Tsonis described Adelaide Comets as a “quality opponent” after falling 1-0 in their Premier League soccer clash at the Parks on Saturday.

“They were runners up to Campbelltown City last year so we knew that we would be in for a tough contest, particularly after their loss last week against Modbury,” Tsonis said.

“Comets started really well and then we came into the game but a lack of concentration hurt us and they scored against the run of play.

Neither side was able to hit the back of the net in the first half but Comets made the perfect start in the second when Ninko Beric scored in the 47th minute.

Olympic pushed hard for an equaliser but in the end Comets held on to take their first three points of the season.

CROYDON KINGS 1

ADELAIDE UNITED 1

Croydon was forced to share the points with Adelaide United Youth after a late strike resulted in a 1-1 stalemate at Jack Smith Park on Friday night.

Kings recruit Sam Carmichael netted an opportunistic opener in the 69th minute before Binyam Kebede, who scored a brace last week, nicked a point with an equaliser in the 86th.

Croydon, which is away to Campbelltown City this Friday night, will be keen to atone for mistakes after taking one point from their opening two matches.

STATE LEAGUE ONE

A lack of concentration in the final seconds against Seaford Rangers cost South Adelaide victory in their State League One clash, according to Panthers coach Andrew Calderbank.

Rangers stole a point with a stoppage-time equaliser from Harry Aplin in the 2-2 draw at Karingal Reserve on Saturday night.

“You can’t switch off in this league and a lack of concentration cost us the game, we let them have chances and they were able to equalise,” Calderbank said.

“Credit to Rangers, they were relentless and aggressive and they never gave up.

“It was a great spectacle and spectators would’ve got their money’s worth.

“We have to move on now and the positives are that we haven’t lost yet and we still take away a point from the game and there were lots of good signs from the game.

“(Goalkeeper) Ryan Veitch has been unbelievable for us this year. Credit to him, he has made some great saves and is in really good form, hopefully he can keep it going.”

The Panthers got off to a good start when Jonathon Rideout, who returned to the club from Seaford in the off-season, netted in the 20th minute.

Dayle Anderson then equalised for Rangers just before half-time.

South’s Jordan Watson converted the penalty as a result to make it 2-1 in the 73rd minute and the visitors looked like they were going to take home maximum points.

But Seaford kept on fighting and was rewarded as Aplin headed the ball in from a corner to equalise for the home side in the 93rd minute.

Adelaide Victory bounced back from a 7-2 drubbing in round one by upsetting White City 3-0 at Rushworth Reserve on Saturday.

Hermann Fombason, Saidi Machochi and Yamin Jamal all hit the back of the net for Victory.

West Torrens Birkalla coach Chris Goddard felt as though the 3-0 scoreline flattered Sturt Lions as his side lost at West Beach on Friday night.

Birks, coming off a 7-2 victory in the opening round, made too many errors, according to Goddard.

“We had our chances in the first half but we didn’t take our opportunities and we were back to the same bad habits that hurt us last season,” Goddard said.

“The last two goals were caused by us making costly skill errors and I don’t feel as though the scoreline told the true story, it probably flattered Sturt in the end.

“We are 1-1 and it’s only early days in the season so we will look to bounce back next week.”

Former Birkalla striker David Thornton opened the scoring for Sturt in the 13th minute and it was 2-0 just before half-time following a costly error in defence by John-Paul Cirillo.

Sturt made it 3-0 in the 85th minute.

Adelaide Victory bounced back from a 7-2 drubbing in round one by upsetting White City 3-0 at Rushworth Reserve on Saturday.

Hermann Fombason, Saidi Machochi and Yamin Jamal all hit the back of the net for Victory.

West Adelaide continued its strong start in the second tier when it defeated Western Strikers 2-1 at TK Shutter Reserve thanks to a penalty either side of the break from Yasmin Sudic.

Goals were hard to come by at Jack Smith Park where Vipers drew 0-0 with Fulham United.

But Playford City had no trouble finding the back of the net, putting four past Adelaide Hills at Ramsay Park. Daniel Ryan struck a double.

STATE LEAGUE TWO

Modbury Vista is top of State League Two after downing competition new boys Pontian Eagles 3-1 at Yalumba Drive Reserve on Friday night.

Pontian, which joined from the amateurs this season, could not contain Vista as Declan Williams, Todd Leahy and Robert MacDonald found the back of the net.

Savas Hatzigeorgiou gave the Eagles some hope with a 74th minute goal to make bring it back to 2-1, before teammate Jeremy Kalaitsidis was sent off in the 83rd for a second yellow and MacDonald hit Modbury’s third just three minutes later.

Captain Iradi Baragomwa and Benny Kovadio both scored twice as Gawler recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory over Pirates at Taparoo Reserve on Friday night.

Gawler will be on the hunt for more goals when it takes on Pontian away this Saturday.
