10 things we learned in local SA footy this weekend revealed

An Adelaide Footy League club in a relegation battle has continued its late season turnaround with a third straight victory. Here are the other highlights from local footy leagues.

Another exciting round of local SA footy action is done and dusted as the state’s country and suburban competitions edge closer to finals.

From thrilling finishes to remarkable individual displays, here are the 10 things we learned this weekend.

SAINTS MARCH TO STAY ALIVE

St Peter’s OC won its third straight game in division one by upsetting Broadview at home, topping the Tigers 9.3 (57) to 7.11 (53) in a thrilling affair.

The hosts led for most of the day, but fell behind late in the fourth term as the Tigers looked to make amends for their heartbreaking loss to Glenunga last week.

SPOC remarkably regained the lead with just two minutes remaining however, star forward Brett Russell taking a big contested mark and booting a long-range goal to keep his club to within just a point of eighth spot Goodwood.

Ben Belperio was inspirational on the ball and at the back while captain James Duncan was a standout in the contest.

RAMS RAMPANT IN HUGE WIN

Glenunga put together one of its best ever displays to stay top of division one, defeating reigning premier Port District by a huge 132 points.

Star player Abe Davis was a machine in the contest and up front, winning plenty of the ball for his side and also moving forward to hit the scoreboard, while Harry Prosser was also a standout six majors.

The Rams defence was the highlight of the day yet again however, the hosts holding the Magpies goalless through the entire second and third quarters.

The result marks one of the club’s biggest wins in its history and sees it stay top by a point.

GULLIES CREATE SEPARATION FOR FINALS

Tea Tree Gully moved two points clear in fifth spot on the division one ladder with an impressive 10.13 (73) to 7.8 (50) win over Sacred Heart OC at home.

The hosts put together a fast start, booting 28-6 clear at quarter time and never looking back, with forward Peter Persinos (five goals) and star midfielder Alex McKay dominating.

Former Crow Luke Brown produced one of his best performances for Gullies so far this season, holding firm at the back to take a number of intercept marks and distribute cleanly to teammates.

FALCONS FLY FOR IMPORTANT WIN

Payneham Norwood Union put together a well-rounded display to defeat Salisbury North 9.11 (65) to 3.4 (22) away from home and hold on to second spot on the division two ladder.

The Falcons were too strong in the contest, with Tom Wagner and Jed Spence battling hard to win plenty of the footy and set up forwards away from the congestion.

Jacob Campbell was also important for the visitors with three big majors.

MAGPIES MAKE A STATEMENT

Kilburn handed Gepps Cross its first loss of the 2023 season in division five, putting together a big first term to set up a 21.14 (140) to 13.5 (83) result.

The Magpies flew out of the gate, with key utility Corey Solly and onballer Rhys O’Keeffe helping their side to a 46-6 quarter-time lead.

Solly was at his best, taking a number of big marks up front and behind the ball and giving defenders headaches with smart leads to kick eight majors.

ROVERS BACK TO THEIR BEST

Reigning premier Renmark made a major statement in the Riverland Football League, defeating Loxton North 16.8 (104) to 4.3 (27) to move above the Panthers in to top spot.

Forward Declan Johnson was everywhere inside the 50 as the Rovers dominated the contest and got the ball to their standout forward, who booted five goals for the game.

Club champion Tim Woolford was at his best through the middle, applying strong pressure as the Rovers held firm to keep the Panthers to just a point in the second term and set up the big win.

ROOS BOUNCE THE SAINTS

West Gambier defeated Millicent for the second time this season on Saturday, producing a big third term to set up a nail biting 5.12 (42) to 5.9 (39) result away from home.

Millicent got off to a fast start to lead 21-8 at half time but it was all the visitors from then on, the Roos dictating play in the middle of the park and booting 4.10 to 2.6 in the final two quarters.

Lewis Lean was integral in the contest and behind the ball, providing a reliable presence throughout the game, while star player Daron McElroy was important up front with two majors.

The win sees the club leapfrog Millicent in to top spot of the Western Border FL.

MUDLARKS STAY IN TOUCH

Myponga-Sellicks held on to second spot in the Great Southern FL with a big win over Langhorne Creek, the Mudlarks dominating at home to emerge 9.15 (69) to 3.5 (23) victors.

The hosts were held to just two behinds in the first quarter but responded in the second term, keeping the Hawks scoreless as they piled on six majors.

Former Collingwood and Melbourne player Ben Kennedy was at his best throughout the contest, winning plenty of the footy in the middle and setting up forwards with top quality disposal.

SUNS STAY TOP

Southern Mallee stayed top in the River Murray FL with an impressive 7.15 (57) to 5.4 (34) win away from home over Mallee Districts.

Rory O’Driscoll and Josh Smithson were inspirational on the ball, winning the contested footy and dealing to teammates with precision as the Suns held their opponent to just three behinds in the first half.

Club captain and former West Adelaide gun Tom Keough was also at his best, playing multiple roles across the ground and hitting the scoreboard with a goal.

WHITE LEADS THE WAY IN SLAUGHTER

South Gawler superstar Patrick White played a sensational game up front in a major result for the Lions over bottom side Kapunda in the Barossa Light and Gawler FA, the gun utility booting seven as his side won 32.16 (208) to 0.3 (3).

The visitors got off to a fast start in what was one of the most one-sided displays in local SA footy this season, holding the Bombers scoreless through the first term and booting 10 goals to lead by 64 points at the first break and set up the victory.

White combined well with Tom Clements (five goals) up front, leading with authority and taking a number of strong marks.

The club remains undefeated in 2023.
