Zayne Gramas-Martin jailed for assaulting two people at Noarlunga Centre Interchange

An “immature” dad joined his friends in a brutal bashing on innocent strangers – and broke a man’s nose – at one of Adelaide’s most dangerous bus interchanges.

A new father broke a man’s nose by punching and kicking him in a violent attack, where members of the public had to intervene.

Zayne Tyson Gramas-Martin, 21, was labelled “immature and naive” after not hesitating to join in and assist his friends.

The Adelaide District Court on Tuesday heard Gramas-Martin was with a group of six others on July 14, 2020 at the Noarlunga Centre Interchange.

A member from his group engaged with three other young people and asked if they had any money.

The other group kept walking but the member complained that someone had spilt drink on his shoes and asked what they were going to do about it.

“Another member of your group then punched the victim of the first count to the left side of his head,” Judge Adam Kimber said during sentencing.

Gramas-Martin picked up a can off the ground and struck the man to the back of the head.

“You then punched that victim to the head more than once and kicked at him when he was on the ground,” Judge Kimber said.

“Although others delivered blows, you have accepted you are responsible for that victim receiving a broken nose, bruising, swelling and cuts.”

The court heard a second victim ended up on the ground.

“While he was on the ground, he was punched and kicked by others,” Judge Kimber said.

“You accept responsibility for what happened to that victim on the basis that you aided and abetted those who punched and kicked him.”

The court heard members of the public witnessed the broad daylight attack and some intervened.

“It is conduct like this which can place ordinary members of the public in fear while walking through public places in which they are entitled to feel safe,” Judge Kimber said.

Noarlunga Centre Interchange was named in 2021 as one of Adelaide’s most dangerous interchanges after figures revealed the number of drivers attacked in a two-year period.

Gramas-Martin, of Elizabeth Grove, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm.

Judge Kimber said it was clear Gramas-Martin had antisocial traits.

The court heard Gramas-Martin, who had previously worked as a labourer, had a child he had never met because he had been in custody.

“You wish to be a proper father to your child,” Judge Kimber said.

The court heard Gramas-Martin had been using drugs since his teenage years.

Judge Kimber said Gramas-Martin remained “immature and naive”.

“You did not instigate the initial altercation … your conduct is consistent with you not caring how it had started,” he said.

“You chose to be violent and aid and abet others without making any inquiry … you do not appear to have hesitated in becoming involved.”

Judge Kimber sentenced Gramas-Martin to one year and eight months jail, with a non parole period of 11 months.

The sentence was backdated to August 4.
