Vandals have dumped a huge log – used to stop cars and motorbikes entering the Byards Road Wetlands – in the middle of a carpark used by Meals on Wheels volunteers.
Hurtle state Labor MP Nat Cook took to Facebook to express her anger at the “peanuts” who moved the log into the carpark of the Byards Community Centre.
“Congratulations to the peanuts that had nothing better to do with their time than drag the huge log that was stopping entry to the wetlands into the carpark used by our incredible Meals on Wheels SA volunteers!” Ms Cook wrote.
The log acts as a barrier to stop cars from driving into the Happy Valley wetlands and damaging its ecosystem, including the vulnerable Lewin’s Rail bird.
“I was completely frustrated and angry to see that again people have deliberately destroyed what is an obvious barrier to stop people driving their cars through,” Ms Cook told The Messenger.
“This is a rare breeding ground for the Lewin’s Rail and there are a range of other animals there that need protecting.
“Riding motorbikes and driving four-wheel-drives through the area is not just dangerous but it’s devastating for the local area and wildlife.”
Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson responded to Ms Cook’s post, saying work would start this morning to move the log back.
