The State Government has unveiled a potential site for the new southern super school

A huge vacant block in Aldinga may become home to a new birth to Year 12 school catering for 1675 students by 2022.

Is this the future of school curriculum?

A possible site for the new southern super school has been revealed by the State Government.

Renewal SA has told the Southern Times that a 94ha vacant block in Aldinga is a potential site for a new birth to year 12 school, which is expected to be open in time for the

2022 school year.

Education Minister John Gardner said the land was located in a “growth area” of Aldinga and that further information would be released once the school’s location was finalised.

“(The site) is close to the local sporting precinct with the potential to form a community hub,” Mr Gardner said.

The plan to build two new super schools — one in the south and one in the north — was announced by the previous government in 2017.

The southern school will cater for up to 1675 students, including 100 with special needs.

It will have a particular focus on science, technology and mathematics to prepare students for careers in the STEM fields.

Renewal SA acting chief executive Mark Devine said a structure plan to identify possible uses of the Main South Rd site was now underway by SA planning company Fyfe.

In addition to the school, the land could be used to duplicate Main South Rd and as a rail corridor to extend the Seaford train line to Aldinga.

Up to 1000 new homes could also be built on the site.

“Engaging with key stakeholders and the local community is a key component of the planning process,” Mr Devine said.

“Of particular importance is that the potential new school and future rail station are seamlessly linked with the existing Aldinga area and the broader region.

“The structure plan will ensure that these significant infrastructure investments are co-ordinated and result in a well-planned extension to the Aldinga community.”

Onkaparinga is one of the state’s fastest growing regions and Onkaparinga Council will partner with the State Government to ensure the plan caters for current and future residents.

Onkaparinga corporate and city services director Alison Hancock said Aldinga in particular was a major growth area in the south.

“People are drawn to the obvious lifestyle, amenity and affordability benefits that Aldinga offers,” Ms Hancock said.

“Our aim is to ensure meaningful community engagement at an early stage so the Aldinga community can be assured they will be able to access everything they need including rail, road, new school facilities and utilities including water and wastewater services.”

She added that any future development would reflect the “unique character and identity” of Aldinga.

The structure plan is expected to be complete by mid-2019.

The land was purchased in 1989 as part of Metropolitan Adelaide’s future land bank and is currently leased for cropping.
