Kicking the winning goal after the siren is something almost every kid dreams of.
And that dream became a reality for Willunga Senior Colts midfielder/forward Tyson Woodcock at the weekend.
With the Demons trailing by a point in their preliminary final against Langhorne Creek and time winding down, the 16-year-old took a mark on the boundary 50m from goal.
The siren sounded just seconds after Woodcock’s grab, meaning he had no option but to line up for an almost impossible set shot.
With everyone looking on, he booted the ball high and left, the wind carrying it back in line and through the big sticks for the win, sending his teammates and supporters into a frenzy.
“As soon as I heard the siren, the nerves kicked in,” Woodcock said.
“With the wind like it was I thought ‘no way I’m gonna kick this’ but I just went for it and made sure to start it near the top of the square to account for the conditions.
“As soon as the ball left my boot I knew it was going in. It was such a good feeling and the moment was pretty emotional – I thought I was going to cry.”
Woodcock and his side started the game strong but fell behind in the second and third terms to trail by 19 points at the final break.
They then picked up the pace during the fourth quarter to boot four goals to none and book a spot in this Saturday’s grand final against Encounter Bay, becoming one of five Willunga sides to make it to the final weekend this season.
“I had done all right leading up to the goal – I’d had a few touches and set up a few snags,” Woodcock said.
“The important thing was I managed to kick that winner and get us to the big dance.”
With Encounter Bay in strong form, the Demons will need to be at their best to get a result.
Woodcock said he now needs to put the drama of last weekend aside and focus on the task at hand.
“I’ve had heaps and heaps of messages congratulating me, it’s been surreal,” he said.
“Encounter Bay is a strong side so we’re locking in and getting ready to play our best footy in what should be a good game. I’m confident we can get the win.”
