As the final siren sounded, cheers erupted from the Flagstaff Hill Football Club’s supporters to celebrate their team beating Noarlunga by 37 points. SFL president Craig Warman said the day was a great success.

“I was extremely happy with how the day went,” Mr Warman said on Monday.

“It was the first time we’ve allowed cars in the grand final and it was pleasing to see that very little alcohol was attempted to be brought in within cars.

“The feedback we’ve had from that decision has been really good.”

The victory was bittersweet for Falcons’ fans, with the club’s B-grade side suffering a 28-point loss to Noarlunga earlier in the day. “It’s been an awesome effort for all involved after a lot of hard work,” Flagstaff Hill’s B-grade coach, Kym Dooley, said.

“Bittersweet – that is the feeling.”

For Shoes fans Monica Thalbourne and Jackie Beard, who were decked out in navy and white with ‘Come on Shoeys!’ written across their backs, the A-grade loss could not put a dampener on their spirits.

“It’s a real shame but can we talk about the B-grade?” Mrs Beard, whose 21-year-old twin sons Sam and Josh played in the premiership, said.

“That was just so exciting.”

Mrs Thalbourne, whose daughter, Katie, is in a relationship with Sam, was equally thrilled. “The kids are off hiding but we don’t mind – we’ll celebrate here!”
