A 38-year-old woman has received a suspended sentence for kicking and spitting at police officers.

Shellie Anne Millard pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers on June 17.

On Tuesday, the Christies Beach Magistrates Court was told police were conducting a welfare check when they found a highly intoxicated Millard in an Adelaide basement carpark.

Magistrate Rodney Oates said police were trying to help Millard when she became aggressive towards them.

“The defendant was aggressive and yelled and swore … before walking towards a police officer yelling out ‘I’m going to get your DNA and report that you raped me’.” Mr Oates said.

“She then spat at the police officer.”

Millard was arrested and taken to the police station where she was placed in a padded cell.

Later, she kicked a female officer in the shin and was placed back in the padded cell.

“It goes without saying that spitting is disgusting and the police need to be protected in exercising their duties,” Mr Oates said.

Millard also faced charges of illegally interfering with a vehicle which related to a November 2019 incident.

She pleaded guilty to stealing $5000 of luggage from the boot of a Northfield man’s car in the early hours of the morning.

After breaking into the car, Millard knocked on the man’s door and asked to borrow a phone to call a taxi.

The man later recognised his luggage being loaded into the taxi and called police.

Millard has been in custody since July and wrote a letter to the court outlining her desire to rehabilitate.

In sentencing, Mr Oates said despite Millard’s “significant and relevant criminal record” he would suspend her four month and eight day imprisonment.

“I did take into strong account what you wrote in your letter, you’re obviously articulate and you know what needs to be done.

“We now need to move beyond the words and into the actions.”
