A registered paramedic has faced court after he was found smashing up an airport toilet heavily intoxicated on his way to work.

Shane Bond, 45, pleaded guilty to damaging property and resisting arrest in the Christies Beach Magistrate court on Tuesday.

The court heard just after 1pm on September 23, Bond entered the downstairs male toilets of Adelaide Airport where he engaged in a verbal altercation with a member of the airport cleaning staff.

The police prosecutor also told the court 45 minutes later Bond was seen entering the parents room located on level two before sliding a microwave into the walkway.

“Shortly after that, at gate 50 a male was yelling inside the male toilets just outside gate 50, civilians said they could hear things being smashed,” the police prosecutor said.

“Just after 2pm, police arrived and noticed the defendant as intoxicated, belligerent, argumentative and confrontational.”

Bond damaged a toilet and walls within the rest room totalling $1901.85

The court heard police attempted to arrests the defendant when Bond began to complain the metal handcuffs were hurting him

“In good faith the police officer removed the handcuffs and provided an alternative, the defendant became increasing agitated towards police, causing a struggle as they tried to put him into a vehicle,” the police prosecutor said.

“The defendant broke free of the plastic handcuffs, he began to lift his legs towards the police, refusing to enter the vehicle.”

Bond was eventually detained and the metal handcuffs were reapplied.

Bond’s defence counsel told the court his client is a “hard-working family man” who has been working on himself and seeking treatment.

“He has been receiving treatment for alcohol dependency since June 2022, he is extremely embarrassed and remorseful,” he said.

“He has no recollection of the events … he works as a fly-in, fly-out emergency service officer and was en route to work the day the offending occurred.”

Magistrate Briony Kennewell ordered $1901 in compensation to the airport and fined Bond $700.

Convictions were recorded.
