A man has been denied home detention bail after allegedly putting several lives at risk in a drunken road rage incident at the weekend.

Ryan Simpson, 39, from Moana sat slumped as he appeared via video link from Christies Beach Magistrates Court on three counts of acts to endanger life, aggravated due care, and drink driving.

A police prosecutor alleged that just after 10am on Sunday, June 6, a 23-year-old driver noticed Simpson driving directly behind her on Commercial Rd, Moana.

“She applied breaks to keep to the speed limit and that’s when she noticed a four-wheel-drive utility real close behind her vehicle,” he said.

“He appeared angry, giving her the finger and beeping his horn.

“As they approached the intersection, he was gesturing to wind down the window before making a swiping motion across his neck as if he was stating he was going to slit her throat.”

Simpson allegedly began winding in and out of the traffic on Commercial Rd before arriving at the corner of Tiller Drive and Commercial Rd.

“The white ute was in front of her when she observed the reversing lights go on the ute before reversing into her, causing a big impact,” the prosecutor told the court.

“She states the ute drove off aggressively while the lights were still red.

“She was terrified.”

The court heard a second woman told police she exited her car and approached the first woman to see if she was okay, before noticing Simpson had made a U-turn and allegedly headed straight for the women, colliding head-on with the 23-year-old’s car.

Simpson was arrested and later submitted to a breath test where he allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.151.

Simpson’s solicitor made the application for home detention before Magistrate Gregory Fisher to which he denied.

No pleas were entered, Simpson will remain in custody and will face court again in September.
