Residents hit out against a Brighton bottle depot

Residents of a seaside suburb are calling for something to be done about a local business which they say has become a hotspot for anti-social behaviour.

Recycling has become a 'religion' not a 'solution'

A beachside community have called for action against a local bottle depot, calling it an ‘eyesore’ and a hotspot for anti-social behaviour.

The bottle depot on Sturt Road, Brighton has become the vain of many surrounding residents’ lives, saying the sound of smashing glass seven days a week has almost ruined the area for them.

Meg Hastings, who has lived in the neighbourhood for more than a decade, said she had been reduced to anger and tears over the business.

“I don’t get how smashing glass is allowed in a residential area,” Ms Hastings said.

“Between the graffiti and the smashed glass, it’s an awful building to look at.

“The weekends are the worst because we have people blocking our driveways, we can’t sleep in because they start smashing glass first thing in the morning.

“Sundays it should be shut.”

After numerous dealings with the council over the past five years, Ms Hastings said she finally snapped, taking to a local Facebook page to express her distaste.

“I’ve always felt alone in this battle,” she said in a post.

“So I was really surprised to see how many people wish for something to be done.

“All we are asking is for some curtesy and for the place to not be open all day everyday.”

A City of Holdfast Bay spokesperson said they would continue to work with both parties to find common ground.

“We have received complaints from a couple of residents regarding a commercial business on Sturt Road. We are continuing to work with the residents and the commercial operator to mitigate the impact on the area,” the spokesperson said.

In the public Facebook post, many attacked the site saying “drunks and drug addicts” have been spotted at the site, however, SAPOL have denied these claims.

“SA Police are unaware of these reports, however encourage anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously, to contact 131444,” a SAPOL spokesperson said.

The depot have been contacted for comment.
