Reigning premier Reynella faces Noarlunga in tomorrow’s Southern Football League grand final
RETIRING Noarlunga captain Shane Comer is aiming for his second Southern Football League flag tomorrow – 13 years after winning his first.
SHANE Comer thought winning Southern Football League premierships was relatively easy when he got one in his debut season in 2001.
Thirteen years later, it remains the Noarlunga captain’s only flag after losing consecutive grand finals in 2002-03 and falling short since.
He is desperately seeking a second in his farewell game for the club – the premiership decider against Reynella at Hickbotham Oval tomorrow.
“To win the one in 2001 then play in the next two (grand finals), coming from division two footy, I thought it was all too easy,” Comer says.
“But they’re very hard to come across and when you do get this opportunity you’ve got to make the most of it.”
Comer says reaching the grand final is a massive achievement for the club, which lost a host of players during pre-season and battled to fill its B-grade.
“We had a mass exodus ... and it was looking pretty bleak at the start of the year,” he says.
“There’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes.”
For Reynella captain Luke Aschmoneit, his focus is on helping the club win back-to-back flags for the first time in its history.
“It’s something that the group is really wanting to do,” Aschmoneit says.
“It’d be just one of the greatest things for the club, not just the playing group, but the supporters as well.
“I watched last decade and marvelled at Morphett Vale and how they consistently … played well and we want this decade to be ours.”
