JAKE Hansen is a little boy with a big heart.

So when the Port Noarlunga Primary School student heard about Bread Tags for Wheelchairs earlier this year, he had to jump on board.

The program – which started in South Africa in 2006 and has spread throughout Australia – encourages individuals and organisations to collect bread tags which are sold to recyclers and the money raised used to fund wheelchairs for those in need.

“It’s a pretty nice thing to do for other people, but it’s good for the environment, too,” Jake, 8, says.

“I like helping others and collecting bread tags is also fun.”

In an effort to ramp up his collection drive, Jake and his classmates approached several businesses within the Onkaparinga area, asking for bread tag donations.

“Each student designed a poster and we went for a community walk through Christies Beach and Port Noarlunga, introducing ourselves and telling them (business owners) what we were doing and why we were doing it,” Jake’s teacher, Courtney Orrin, says.

“Everyone was so genuinely humbled by it and it was empowering to see Year 2s and Year 3s walking around the streets trying to promote something that’s not only good for the environment, but people in need.”

Port Noarlunga Primary School has been collecting bread tags since May and established a donation box in its front office, allowing the general public to donate to the cause.

Once it has been filled, the tags will be sent to a recycling facility and the process of turning them into wheelchairs will begin.
