Trolleys are being thrown up into trees and set on fire, according to an Onkaparinga councillor.
Cr Marion Themeliotis has asked the council to look into ways it can reduce the numbers of trolleys dumped throughout the district.
She said she had received reports from residents of trolleys stuck in trees and dumped on streets and set alight.
“I have received several calls and contacts through social media on abandoned trolleys being left lying around in our suburbs, reserves, in streams and in trees,” Cr Themeliotis said.
“The issue becomes bigger when people choose to dump rubbish the trolleys and in some cases set the rubbish alight.”
This had “posed hazards to pedestrians and cyclists”.
She understood it was not strictly a local government issue — residents were encouraged to contact supermarkets to pick them up.
But it looked unsightly and encouraged “further illegal dumping of rubbish”.
Cr Themeliotis urged the council to work with local shops to tackle the problem.
Council staff will now prepare a report with possible solutions for the council to consider.
