A three-storey modern building housing retail outlets and apartments will replace one of the south’s last remaining general stores.
Onkaparinga Council’s assessment panel has approved Trice Pty Ltd’s $2 million development – to be called Sands on Sellicks – for 87-88 Esplanade.
The old-fashioned general store and post office currently on the site will be demolished and replaced with a three-storey building, which will have five apartments on its upper floors.
The apartments will each have three bedrooms and ocean views.
A new general shop and post office will be included in the complex’s ground floor, along with a third retail outlet, with operating hours restricted to 8am to 9pm, seven days a week.
Friends of Sellicks chairperson Hazel Manning expected the community would welcome the development.
“Now it’s been passed I think that Sellicks is growing as a community, there’s a lot of people moving in here and a lot of new residential buildings being built so it’s fitting that they do have a new development,” Ms Manning said.
“I think there are some people in the area who do want to keep it as a nice quiet town but you can’t have a quiet town and have infrastructure as well, the two don’t go hand-in-hand.
“If you have infrastructure then people are going to come here and you have to do it well.
“So I think it’s great and it’s a step forward for Sellicks.”
