New $50m homemaker centre for the south to create 300+ jobs

MORE than 300 jobs will be created by a $50 million homemaker centre at Seaford Meadows.

Living Australia director Elli Cakar last month lodged a development application with Onkaparinga Council to build the 31,000sq m shopping complex on Seaford Rd, opposite Bunnings.

Mr Cakar hoped work on the development, with its promise of creating between 300 and 400 jobs during and after construction, would begin at the end of 2018 or early 2019.

It would be the only major homemaker centre in Adelaide’s south, and similar in size to the Mile End Home complex on Railway Tce.

“It’s going to clean (the land) up,” Mr Cakar said.

“It’s just an eyesore at the moment.

“There is nowhere to lease a space on Seaford Rd — and it is a major thoroughfare — and this will provide people with somewhere to go.”

The plans included five new buildings in addition to an existing building on abutting McMillan Rd, with signage, about 660 car parking spaces and landscaping.

A “blue chip lessee” has already secured 10,000sq m in space, but Mr Cakar would not name the business, citing confidentiality.

The number of tenancies was yet to be decided and would be determined by the size of each shop — and finalised after securing development approval.

“We could have up to 30 or 40 tenants, but then as few as 11 or 12,” he said.

“But we have had a lot of interest.”

He said Seaford is an up-and-coming suburb and expects it to “boom” because of more retail activity and residential development earmarked for the area.

Hickinbotham has lodged plans with the State Commission Assessment Panel for a $215 million housing estate in Seaford Meadows — the current home of southern celebrity Gary the Goat.

The development, on the corner of Commercial and Jared roads, would have about 600 homes.

“If you have those families or new home builds looking for homemaker stuff, they will be coming there,” Mr Cakar said.

“I think everyone is loving (the plans).”

An Onkaparinga Council spokesman could not say when the application was likely to be assessed.

“The application will be considered in more detail, including a determination about the process it’s required to undergo, once we receive outstanding information from the applicant,” he said.

“Until this information is received we cannot provide a timeline for a decision to be made.”

Mr Cakar hoped it would all be up and running by the end of 2019.
