The latest pet registration figures out of Marion Council have revealed some of the most popular dog breeds in the region.
The council had more than 13,500 dogs registered and 938 cats registered in 2019/20.
Small dog breeds reign supreme in the region making up half of the top 20.
Maltese account for more than 10 per cent of the total registered dogs and are the most popular breed with 1470 in the area.
Chihuahuas, Jack Russell terriers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels and both miniature and toy poodles all feature in the top 20.
Labrador retrievers are second most popular with 1069 and golden retrievers place are eighth on the list with 527.
Traditional working dogs including border collies, Australian cattle dogs and Australian kelpies all feature in the top 20.
Lesser-known breeds including Lhasa apso, Bichon Frise and Hungarian Vizsla didn’t make the top 20 but are still popular breeds in Marion with more than 40 of each registered in the area.
Last financial year just 103 expiations of $170 were issued to dog owners who did not register their pets by the August cut off.
Just last week, one Edwardstown dog owner was shocked to receive a letter from the Marion Council telling her she was in breach of a by-law by owning two dogs.
She was required to pay a $36 application fee and have a council officer inspect her property to allow her to keep the second dog or risk a $187.50 fine.
