Minister John Gardner yet to make a decision on Hopgood Theatre’s future

The future of the beloved Hopgood Theatre is still up in the air, as the community waits for a State Government’s decision.

Hopgood Theatre rally draws loud crowd

The southern community is still waiting for a decision on the future of the embattled Hopgood Theatre, almost a month after Onkaparinga Council discussed its fate.

At its July meeting, the council went behind closed doors to consider possible options to save the much-loved Noarlunga theatre.

Earlier this month, the council met with Education Minister John Gardner and representatives of Country Arts SA for further discussions.

However, the State Government is yet to announce whether it will help keep the theatre afloat.

“The discussions were very positive and we are awaiting further feedback from Minister Gardner regarding future options,” Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said.

The Hopgood’s future has been in question since the State Government cut funding to Country Arts SA, which runs the theatre.

The theatre was able to secure short-term funding in 2018 and twice in 2019.

Ms Thompson said the council indicated it was happy to work through funding options with the State Government in order to save the theatre.

“We continue to advocate strongly for the State Government to provide ongoing funding to prevent closure of the Hopgood Theatre and contribute to the significant capital investment required to ensure its future viability,” she said.

“Our estimate is that the theatre requires a $5 million upgrade to provide a modern, creative arts facility for the south.”

Ms Thompson said the theatre was essential to the southern metropolitan area and the Fleurieu Peninsula, which made up 13 per cent of the state’s population.

“Our community has a longstanding and strong connection with the Hopgood Theatre,” she said.

“It’s (the theatre) essential … allowing local artists to home their skills, entertaining residents through performances from home and abroad, and providing schools with a key education space.”

Mr Gardner was contacted for comment.
