Meet SA’s more unconventional but loveable pets

Cats and dogs aren’t the only animals to live happily with humans. When we asked you to share photos of your more unusual pets, you replied with lizards and snakes, and an orphaned kangaroo. Here’s a selection of our favourites.

SA’s less traditional but loveable pets.

When The Messenger and The Advertiser put out a call for your pets that were neither cats or dogs we weren’t sure what to expect.

But you responded, sending us some delightful – and quirky – creatures you clearly adore.

Monty the alpaca from Saddleworth, north of Adelaide, stole hearts with his cheery disposition and sweet nose.

So did Vinnie, the orphaned kangaroo, lizard BT, and Asha from Morphett Vale with her spiny leaf insects.

Thanks to Matt Rycroft down south for his array of lizards and a kookaburra.

And we decided to include southern celeb Gary the goat, from Seaford Meadows, who, although not a traditional pets is loved by the locals.

And we didn’t think this gallery would be complete without Adelaide Hills pet Buddy the fallow deer.

The State Government last year increased the number of native animals people can keep as pets without a permit, which means more of you are able to welcome the less traditional pets into your homes. At the time the Environment Department said it hoped the new laws would strengthen the bonds between people and native animals. They seem to be working.
