Plans to turn a McLaren Vale shopping centre carpark into a three-storey motel have been approved by Onkaparinga Council.
The council’s assessment panel has approved a proposal for the motel, directly behind the McLaren Vale Central Shopping Centre.
The cost of the development, or the developer, was not revealed.
The 82 one-bedroom motel rooms will be available for short-term accommodation.
Sitting alongside the Shiraz Trail, the rooms will have views of neighbouring vineyards to the north and north west.
The Main Road site is currently used as overflow carparking for the shopping centre which is home to supermarkets, cafes and retail stores.
A new carpark will be built adjacent the shopping centre to make up for spaces lost as part of the motel development.
Plans for the motel also include a restaurant, function room and underground carparking to accommodate 39 cars.
A report prepared by COX Architects said plans for the motel had been completely redesigned following council feedback.
Those changes included a softer palette of colours and materials and the inclusion of a basement carpark to reduce the height of the building.
The report said the motel would provide much-needed accommodation in the centre of McLaren Vale.
“Presently, there are limited accommodation options of this king, with most accommodation providing a different type of stay and facilities,” the report said.
“The establishment of such a facility is a significant commitment and investment by the proponent to the McLaren Vale, and South Australian, tourism industry.”
