As the love of seaside living returns, residents of one Adelaide’s best kept secrets are calling for help to keep a ‘cult classic’ in the community’s hands.
The Marino Rocks cafe and restaurant has graced the cliffside in Adelaide’s south for more than six decades, now the beloved site is set to be transformed into the 21st century with a “for the community by the community” approach, in hopes to turn the site in a co-op hub.
David Bagshaw, who is on the board for Marino Rocks Community Co-Operative, said the committee are calling for those to join in on the vision.
“There’s so much potential to reconnect to the community,” Mr Bagshaw said.
“While it will be a commercial and professional business, it’s aspirations will be community owned and open to all sorts of engagement.
“Right now we are trying to gain as many members are we can to help get this project off the ground.
“We have seen places like the Boatshed in Hallett Cove all the way down to Brighton become a destination for people, this has the same potential.”
The cafe will be professionally run, rebranded as Marino Rocks Social and will focus on local produce and sustainability.
Mr Bagshaw said the board was optimistic the venue would showcase local art and music; and house a small general store with day-to-day essentials and luxuries by local makers.
The Marino Rocks was built by fisherman Bert Fooks in 1961 and managed by his partner Rita Fooks before the current owners, Tekin and Gulten Sabuncu, purchased the building in 1993.
Mr Bagshaw said Mrs Sabuncu were instrumental in the rollout of the community co-op, having been apart of the community for so many years.
“Gulten is a strong businesswoman.” he said
“Gulten has expressed to us many times that she is happy that it is staying within the community because it easily could have been taken up by a developer.
“This place is a cult classic for many people.”
