A man still enraged over a road rage incident allegedly attacked a man with a weapon until his “brain protruded” at Adelaide’s largest shopping centre.
Luke Shane Fred Williams, 33, applied for home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, after he allegedly caused life threatening injuries during the vicious assault.
A prosecutor said they were opposed to the bail application, for the protection of the alleged victim and the strength of their case.
“It (the alleged attack) followed what I can describe as a road rage incident between Mr Williams and the alleged victim the day before,” the prosecutor said.
Police say the 58-year-old alleged victim was sitting in a parked car at Westfield Marion shopping centre on Diagonal Road on October 10, last year.
The court heard Mr Williams recognised the alleged victim from the day before and went over to him on foot before allegedly using a weapon to assault him.
The prosecutor said Mr Williams allegedly used the same weapon to smash the window of his car.
“The alleged complainant sustained serious life threatening head injuries, including a fracture to the complainant’s skull, penetrating the brain which caused part of the brain to protrude from his forehead,” the prosecutor said.
He was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre.
The court heard the alleged incident was captured on CCTV footage.
David Moen, for Mr Williams, told the court his client’s criminal history was from several years prior and it would be a lengthy time before he went to trial.
Mr Williams, of Ascot Park, pleaded not guilty in the same hearing to causing serious harm with intent.
He was initially charged with attempted murder but the charge was dropped after charge determination in January.
Magistrate Simon Smart denied Mr Williams bail and committed him to the District Court for arraignment in July.
