A new gym opening the southern suburbs will feature a rare collection of refurbished exercise equipment made famous by a number of Hollywood bodybuilding icons.

The collection of the iconic Nautilus machines, the first collection of their kind in Australia, cost LPZmethod Strength & Performance Old School Gym owners Lachlan and Paula Zrim almost $300,000 to refurbish.

Superstars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude van Damme and Susan Sarandon were among dozens of celebrities who credited the machines with helping sculpt their iconic muscular physics in the 1970s and 80s.

Mr Zrim said around 5000 hours of labour had gone into restoring the 50-year-old machines, which form the centrepiece of the new Melrose Park fitness hub.

“We managed to strike a deal with a collector to purchase an almost complete set of 24 of these machines in 2022,” he told The Advertiser.

“They were in dire need of some serious TLC … painstakingly we stripped each machine down to the very last nut and bolt before powder coating, reupholstering and then reassembling each one piece by piece.

“This endeavour took up every ounce of spare time they had, but it was a labour of love and at a rate of one machine a month we spent the next two years working long hours seven days a week, breathing new life into them.”

Mr Zrim said on top of the Nautilus machines, the new facility also included elite level powerlifting equipment, free weight training, Kiva Wellness infra-red sauna, Odin ice bath, massage recliners and Normatec compression recovery.

“Our goal was to provide a complete range of services within the one facility,” he said.

“We also provide a wide variety of effective and fun group training, nutritional guidance and body composition tracking as well as a state of the art recovery suite.”

LPZmethod Strength & Performance Old School Gym opened last month and is located at 8 Marion St, Melrose Park.
