An O’Sullivan Beach mother is living every parent’s worst nightmare after her 16-month-old son became paralysed after waking up from a routine post-playtime nap.
Sarah Bradbury said son Justin woke “hysterical” from his nap on Tuesday.
“He was inconsolable, he lost his functions,” Mrs Bradbury said.
“We went from Noarlunga Hospital to Flinders to finally the Women’s and Children’s on Tuesday afternoon.
“They had no idea what it was, they did so many tests which all came back negative.”
Justin was later diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare neurological disease, which he may never fully recover from.
“I’ve had people reach out saying that their kids have recovered from it but because Justin is so young, we don’t know if that will be the case for him,” Mrs Bradbury said.
“There is swelling around his spinal cord, it’s all really unknown.”
Danielle Tyrrell, a family friend of the Bradbury’s, started a GoFundMe on Saturday in the hope to help the family with living costs after Justin’s dad Nathan had to reduce his work hours to look after Justin’s three other siblings.
With the page well eclipsing the $10,000 mark over the weekend, it was the generous donation from former NBA champion Andrew Bogut that blew the Bradbury’s away.
“His name sounded familiar but I’m not a huge sport person I just thought ‘who is this generous man?’” she said.
Bogut retweeted a tweet on Monday morning, containing the link to the GoFundMe, broadcasting it to his healthy 400k followers, before donating $2668 of his own money.
“Everyone’s donations are so appreciated, it helps with the petrol and the travelling costs, we’re still trying to sort everything out.
“But just knowing there are so many people thinking about him and wishing him well, it means to much.”
Justin remains in hospital where he’s being closely monitored.
