A former drug addicted man allegedly hatched a “sophisticated” scheme where he stole an accounting firm’s electronics and used them to transfer himself large amounts of money, a court has heard.

Julian Raymond Summers, 35, told police since he regretted his actions since he went off drugs.

A police prosecutor told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday that there was a break-in at accounting firm Wright Evans Partners in Wayville on November 13.

“Stolen from the premises were 18 computer towers, a camera, a Samsung tablet and a number of other electronic items,” the police prosecutor said.

“Seven successful transactions were made from an account of Wright Evans Partners into what’s called a mule account – totalling funds in the excess of $85,000.”

The police prosecutor told the court a computer was stolen from Groundline Engineering in Frewville on December 16.

“Police were advised by the victim that the stolen computer was online and had been remotely accessed by the victim’s IT company,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard the remote access video provided to police allegedly showed pictures of Summers, as well as photos of large amounts of cash and drugs.

“Police have attended his house address … they located 40 mobile phones, each marked with a phone number and name – police suspect they have been used in the offending,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard police also allegedly found hard drives, documents and a credit card linked to the accounting firm.

“He told police in an interview that now that he’s off the drugs, he regrets the things he may have done in the past,” the police prosecutor said.

Summers, of Hackham, is charged with multiple offences, including serious criminal trespass and theft.

He is yet to enter any pleas.

Jason Evitts, for Summers, told the court his client had been turning his life around since being addicted to drugs for a long time

“He now for the first time is getting treatment and has been abstinent from drug use for four weeks,” Mr Evitts said.

“It seems that his offending history is closely linked to drug use.”

Mr Evitts told the court Summers had been diagnosed with autism and had a “hopeful future”, if given the opportunity to continue the drug rehabilitation program.

Magistrate Elizabeth Sheppard denied Summers bail.

“Firstly, the serious and apparently sophisticated nature of the offending, secondly, the strength of the prosecution case and thirdly, the risk of reoffending,” she said.

“The facts are quite compelling.”

The charges were adjourned until June.
