An Aldinga Beach man claims it was his pre-workout supplements that caused a positive methamphetamine drug test.
Jake Billy Bradshaw appeared in the Christies Beach Magistratea Court having had a positive drug reading – a breach of his bail conditions for unrelated charges.
He pleaded guilty on Friday to the breach of bail but claimed it was pre-workout supplements including Broken Arrow pre-workout that caused the positive reading for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
But a police prosecutor told the court testing procedures were very clear.
The 31-year-old was on bail on unrelated charges – that were subsequently withdrawn – when he failed a drug test in May this year.
A condition of his bail was that he was not to consume any drugs or alcohol.
Broken Arrow contains the ingredient 2-aminoisoheptane also known as dimethylhexylamine, which is a powerful stimulant.
“The defendant said he was taking two pre-workout supplements at the time he provided the sample,” a police prosecutor told the court.
“He had been previously advised by his corrections officer to be careful taking them but he took them anyway and he said the positive result could be due to the supplements and not the methamphetamine.”
“The testing procedures are very clear that it can only be methamphetamine if it is detected as methamphetamine.”
Magistrate Rodney Oates convicted Bradshaw and fined him $240 for the breach of bail.
