A 25-year-old Woodcroft man has been bailed after allegedly threatening a rideshare driver with a hatchet and then dragging him from the car.
Logan Reece Brown was charged with aggravated theft using force for the alleged carjacking on March 18.
The rideshare driver was sitting in his Toyota Camry near the intersection of Cottage Lane and Gates Road, at Hackham, about 6.30pm when a white van stopped in front of his car.
Brown allegedly jumped out of the van and threatened the driver with a hatchet before dragging him from his car and stealing it.
Brown allegedly left a piece of paper in the car with his address on it.
The Christies Beach Magistrates Court heard Brown – who has serious mental health issues – had allowed his antipsychotic medicine to lapse and it was during that time that the alleged offending occurred.
“He tells me that he knows he must address this in a positive way,” defence lawyer Jon Lister said.
“It would seem that if he had to remain in custody, the opportunities to do this would be minimal.”
Police opposed bail on the basis of the seriousness of the alleged offence and it being an “unprovoked attack on a member of the public”.
Magistrate Susan O’Connor approved home detention bail but said Brown would need to address his mental health and drug use.
“It appears that there are a number of factors that make him fragile, his drug taking makes him fragile, his sleeplessness makes him fragile, his borderline personality disorder must be difficult to deal with and he’s experiencing hallucinations and he needs to do stuff about this,’ she said.
“There’s got to be a complete turn around and care shown by you and your mother.
“You need to be very alert to the number of problems you’ve got, auditory hallucinations cannot be tolerated by you.”
Brown will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in December.
