The State Government has revealed the first look at a $33 million upgrade of Flagstaff Road.
A section of the road between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road will be expanded to a two-way dual carriageway to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion.
The infamous road has long been a source of confusion for motorists as the centre lane is reversed daily to manage traffic during peak times.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Corey Wingard said it was exciting to see progress on the vital road project.
“More than 21,000 motorists use this road every day and it’s current design can cause confusion and lead to accidents,” he said.
“The widening of the road will not only improve safety, it will also reduce traffic congestion, save valuable minutes from the commute time for locals and improve access for emergency services vehicles.”
A new central median, shared-use path, bicycle lane, safety barrier and lighting will also be included as part of the project as well as sheltered turning lanes in Elly Court and Hyland Avenue.
Davenport MP Steve Murray said locals had been pushing for the upgrade for decades.
“For many years people living in the southern suburbs have been crying out for an additional lane on Flagstaff Road,” Mr Murray said.
Works are set to begin late this year with major construction to commence in early 2021.
