Emerging SA golfer Jack Williams on track for place on Australian PGA Tour

SEVEN-hour days practising at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club are paying off for Jack Williams, with a spot on the Australian PGA Tour within sight.

SEVEN-hour days of practising at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club are paying off for Jack Williams.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise over the past month and is within sight of a spot on the Australian PGA Tour this summer.

Only two years ago, Williams was just one of a number of promising SA junior golfers, but now he is the second-ranked senior player in the state and 21st in Australia.

The Hallett Cove resident, who credits spending countless hours practising, will attend Australia PGA Tour  School in Melbourne this December.

A top-35 finish at the event will see him gain virtually unlimited access to major events around the country this summer and turn professional.

"It'd be nice to get onto the tour and start to earn some money,'' says Williams, who works at his Flagstaff Hill club at present.

"Top 60 will get you a tour card but top 35 will get you access to pretty much everything in Australia.

"I spend about seven hours a day practising at Flagstaff and about 40 hours a week.

"I've thought about setting up a mattress here, so I don't have to go home."

Williams, who moved to Australia from England seven year ago, burst onto the scene when he won the SA Amateur Championship as a 17-year-old in 2011.

He finished 32nd at the Australian Amateur Championships in 2012 and showed his outstanding talent when he won Flagstaff Hill Pro Am earlier this year.

Playing as an amateur against a field that included 14 professionals, Williams fired a scorching 66 to win by three strokes on his home course.

Among his lofty goals is to play at the Australian Open this summer.
