A teenager who lost control of his car speeding around a corner and fled the scene of the crash in Edwardstown has faced court.
Alex Balaban Chau pleaded guilty in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court to driving without due care and failing to stop and give details at a crash scene.
The 18-year-old also pleaded guilty to driving as a learner driver without an authorised driver or L-plates in the car.
On August 26, Chau was driving his Holden commodore on Conmurra Avenue, Edwardstown when he lost control of the car and veered off the road into a pole, kerb, fence and a parked vehicle.
Chau told the court did not remember how he crashed and what speed he was doing.
“I wasn’t mentally, 100 per cent there, I just was not thinking straight and when I got into my car I had a blank and I was just in a crash,” he said.
A police prosecutor told the court Chau ran from the property after the crash.
“He admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the collision and stated he was doing about 80km/h and lost control at the bend and could not remember much about the accident,” she said.
“He stated he did not give particulars to any person because no one spoke to him and he ran away because he was scared to speak to police.”
Police attended the scene and later arrested Chau.
“What a disastrous day this was,” Magistrate Rodney Oates said.
“Please don’t let anything like this happen again.”
He convicted Mr Chau and sentenced him to 90 hours of community service.
