Locals can have their say on the long-awaited duplication of Main South Rd.

The State Government will this week begin community consultation on making the road, from Seaford to Sellicks Beach, two-way.

The duplication will be done in two stages, starting with a 10km stretch of the road from Griffiths Drive to Aldinga Beach Rd.

This will include include the duplication of the Pedler Creek Bridge at Seaford Rise and cost $305 million, which includes $2 million for a planning study.

The second stage is currently unfunded and will continue the duplication of Main South Rd for approximately 6km from Aldinga to Sellicks Beach.

The planning study will use community feedback, such as which roads people use to access health, education and employment in the area, to help inform the concept design.

Members of the project team will be available to talk to locals at the following locations:

ALDINGA Shopping Centre, Thursday, July 18, 4pm-8pm;

SEAFORD Shopping Centre, Saturday, July 27, 9am-5pm;

WILLUNGA Almond Blossom Festival at the Willunga Recreation Park, Saturday, July 27, 11am-3pm.

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll said the duplication project would help cut travel times, bust congestion and improve road safety.

“This is such an important upgrade for the local community and that’s why we are getting their feedback early in the process,” Mr Knoll said.

“We want to know where local residents travel to, what services they need to access in the local area and feed that input into the planning stage.

“It’s important we get this right and that’s why we are consulting the local community.”

Main South Rd is used by 18,000 vehicles each day.

When both stages are completed the road will be two-lanes each way from the Flinders Medical Centre to Sellicks Beach.

Between 2012 and 2016, there were 237 crashes between Robinson Rd, Seaford Heights (which connects to Griffiths Drive) and Sellicks Beach Rd.

Residents, including the Main South Rd Action Group, have campaigned for the duplication project for years with more than 1000 locals signing a petition in 2017.

Last year, they requested the State Government “do the job properly” the first time and replace two proposed roundabouts with an underpass.
