Colonnades Shopping Centre to welcome Aldi, Masters and more specialty stores in $52m expansion

A BID for a large-scale expansion of a shopping centre in Adelaide’s south has been given the nod — with work on the $52m development to start next year.

WORK will begin next year on a $52 million expansion of the Colonnades Shopping Centre.

Onkaparinga Council’s development assessment panel has now approved an application by its owners, Federation Centres.

The expansion includes an Aldi supermarket, Masters Home Improvement store, more specialty stores and a fresh food precinct.

It will be the largest upgrade to the centre in more than 10 years and will add an extra 24,500sqm of retail space to the 62,500sq m shopping centre.

Federation Centres external affairs manager Brandon Phillips could not put a figure on the how many jobs would be created, but said it would be “several hundred”.

The works are planned for the centre’s eastern end which extends to Goldsmith Drive and Jackson Place.

They also include a new shopping centre entrance, 800 car spaces, a stand-alone bulky goods store and an expansion of the Woolworth supermarket.

Construction on the 1577sq m Aldi store and 13,508sq m Masters Home Improvement outlet will begin next year.

Work on the Woolworths supermarket and the creation of 1200sq m of specialty shops would also begin in 2015.

The plan’s final stage is the construction of the stand alone 2650sq m bulky goods store.

Four significant trees — with a trunk circumference of 2m — will be removed to make way for the expansion.
