It’s been 40 years since the biggest shopping centre in Adelaide’s southern suburbs opened its doors.
In October 1979, hundreds of shoppers lined up to be the first to enter Colonnades in Noarlunga Centre.
Goldsmith Drive was banked up with Datsuns, Toranas and HK Monaros as locals eagerly headed to the first major shopping centre to open in the region.
Back then, it had 70 stores – including a Coles and Kmart – and was spread across 46,000sq m of floor space.
Today, the centre is nearly double the size at 84,151sq m and has more than 120 shops including Coles, Kmart, Aldi and Big W.
It has undergone major renovations in 2003 and 2016 and the lower-level is currently being upgraded with a new-look Coles, an expanded Chemist Warehouse and 18 new stores set to open next year.
Vicinity Centre’s Regional Manager Zoltan Heinrich – who has worked at Colonnades since 2005 – said there would be celebrations at the centre for the rest of this month.
“It’s been 40 years since Colonnades opened its doors for customers on the Fleurieu Peninsula and today we remain committed to serving our local community,” Mr Heinrich said.
“Some of the highlights of Colonnades over the decades include visits from famous chef Jamie Oliver to Australian basketball superstar Patty Mills and pop sensation Ricki Lee.
“As part of the birthday celebrations shoppers are also invited to share their memories of
