A father-of-five who previously stole a car full of drugs was allegedly caught with hundreds of grams of meth and fantasy in his backpack, a court heard.

Addict unrecognisable after transformation

A father-of-five who spiralled into a life of drugs and crime was allegedly caught with large amounts of meth and fantasy in his backpack.

Colm Patrick Francis O’Hare, 45, applied for home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday, charged with the significant drug bust.

A prosecutor said they were opposed to bail, as it was a strong prosecution case and Mr O’Hare had two prior convictions for similar offending.

The court heard police found 270g of methamphetamine, $20,000 in cash and 134g of GHB, also known as fantasy, in Mr O’Hare’s backpack on April 11 at Hackham.

“At his premises … 515g of GHB was found in two separate containers,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor told the court Mr O’Hare was sentenced for drug trafficking after police found drugs and cash in his backpack in June 2013.

The father is charged with multiple offences, including commercial drug trafficking and money laundering. He is yet to enter any pleas.

Chris McDonough, for Mr O’Hare, agreed he had recent relevant convictions, but one had a strange background.

“It was not a straightforward case of trafficking in a controlled drug but rather bizarre circumstances where Mr O’Hare had stolen a car, found out who it belonged to and returned their car, being informed that it was full of drugs,” he said.

The court heard Mr O’Hare could work for a demolition company upon his release.

Mr McDonough told the court Mr O’Hare’s parents could each offer $5000 cash surety.

Chief Magistrate Judge Mary-Louise Hribal denied Mr O’Hare bail, due to the seriousness of the alleged offending and risk of reoffending.

The charges were adjourned until September.
