A Morphett Vale man has pleaded guilty to drink driving after a few morning drinks with a friend.
Anthony Michael John Gore, 36, faced the Christies Beach Magistrates Court last week, charged with drink driving and driving without due care in July.
The court heard Gore – who had recently lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic – had visited a friend to talk about job prospects at 9am.
He had three non-standard “Bundy and cokes” before leaving after 11.30am.
Police were called to the Morphett Vale address after Gore crashed into a neighbour’s letterbox and a parked car.
“Police observed tyre marks on the road leading to the scene of a collision,” a police prosecutor said.
“It looks like he hit a letterbox, had significant damage to the right side of his vehicle and he also hit a parked car.”
Police breath-tested Gore and he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.120.
He was issued a six month instant loss of license.
Magistrate Teresa Anderson said the offence was serious but was not normal behaviour for Gore.
“Most of us have a cup of tea at 9 o’clock not a drink of alcohol,” she said.
“The serious aspect of this is really that you were drinking alcohol in the morning for about two hours prior to (the incident).
“Not being a seasoned drinker, the effect of the alcohol on you caused you … to lose control of the car into the letterbox.
“Like many people in the community, times have been tough for you, having had a good job with the onset of Covid you’ve lost that good job.”
Ms Anderson convicted Gore and issued him a $1100 fine and additional three month loss of licence.
