A $52 million expansion of Colonnades Shopping Centre is the biggest in 10 years and likely to create hundreds of jobs
PLANS for a whopping $52m expansion of a shopping centre in Adelaide’s south have been lodged with the local council and include a discount supermarket, a home improvement store — and 800 new carparks.
COLONNADES Shopping Centre is planning a $52 million expansion which includes an Aldi supermarket and Masters Home Improvement store.
The redevelopment will be the largest at the Noarlunga Centre complex in more than 10 years and create several hundred jobs.
Federation Centres, which owns Colonnades, has lodged plans with Onkaparinga Council for the work, which would include a new fresh food precinct, speciality shops and 800 car parks.
Federation Centres external affairs manager Brandon Phillips said the expansion would bring a host of new retail options to the southern community.
“The $52 million redevelopment ... will ensure Colonnades continues to be a destination of choice for South Australians for the foreseeable future,” Mr Phillips said.
He could not put figure on the number of jobs that would be created, but said it would be “several hundred”.
The development will go before the council’s Development Assessement Panel on Thursday.
The council’s planning staff have recommended it be approved subject to 16 conditions, including it be completed five years from when work starts.

Under the plan, work on the 1577sq m Aldi store and 13,508sq m Masters Home Improvement outlet would begin next year.
Work to expand an existing Woolworths supermarket and to create 1200sq m of specialty shops would also begin in 2015.
The plan’s final stage would see a stand alone 2650sq m bulky goods store built.
The works are planned for the centre’s eastern end which extends to Goldsmith Drive and Jackson Place.
Adjoining property owners were consulted on the proposal in September and one response was received from Cardijn College.
A council report said the response did not say whether the college supported the expansion, but raised concerns with increased traffic and potential dangers for students crossing Goldsmith Drive.
The report said a development application for traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing on Goldsmith Drive was being considered concurrently with this application.
The centre, built in 1979, was last upgraded in 2003 undergoing a $125 million expansion to include more stores.
Colonnades has more than 200 retailers.
