A $1.8 million On the Run service station to be built in Aldinga

THE state’s peak planning body has approved a contentious application for an On the Run service station to be built in a historical southern suburb.

A CONTENTIOUS On the Run service station planned for Aldinga has been approved by the state’s peak planning body.

The Development Assessment Commission yesterday signed off on the 24-hour petrol station for the corner of Main South and Port roads.

The $1.8 million service station will include a drive-through fast food outlet, 49 car spaces, car wash bays and picnic tables.

The application, by Shahin Properties, was lodged with Onkaparinga Council in 2013.

The council rejected the development in February last year because it did not fit in with the town’s historical image.

Shahin Properties appealed the decision in the Environment, Resources and Development Court.

The application went back and forth between the court and the council before the DAC took control in September.

The DAC can only strip councils of their planning powers if developments are worth more than $3 million.

At the time, a Planning Department spokeswoman said the development was worth more than $3 million when considering all construction and fitout costs.

The development has divided the town as some people said it would bring much-needed jobs to the area, while others believe the service station would spoil Aldinga’s semirural ambience.
