A new sports and community hub in SA’s south will officially open to the public on Saturday. Marion Council’s Mitchell Park Sports and Community Centre on 139 Bradley Grove is one of the largest of its kind in Adelaide.

The southern hub, worth $16 million, will host indoor and outdoor activities and house the following nine clubs:

  • Mitchell Park Football Club
  • Mitchell Park Cricket Club
  • Mitchell Park Tennis Club
  • Mitchell Park Netball Club
  • South Adelaide Basketball Club
  • South Adelaide Rugby League Club
  • Dover Gardens Dog Obedience Club
  • Adelaide Radio Controlled Raceway

The federal government contributed $5 million and Marion Council $10.74 million, while the state government put in $350,000.

Included at the hub are significant sporting facilities, a neighbourhood centre, kiosk, function spaces and public art curated by the City of Marion.

“We estimate about 1200 people per week will use the Mitchell Park Sports and Community Centre for a variety of sporting and recreational activities,” Mayor of Marian, Kris Hanna said.

“The Neighbourhood Centre will also be a busy, friendly place where a range of social activities will be organised.”

South Adelaide Basketball Club president Zoran Pajkovski was thrilled the Panthers finally had top-drawer sporting facilities.

“We’ve been chasing new courts for possibly the last 25 years – ‘The Shed’ was good but it was probably a bit of a 1960s venue,” Pajkovski said.

“It’s fantastic, we all love it, we have somewhere new and modern to play, the facilities are going to be really beneficial for the players, staff and the club overall.”

Pajkovski also added the hub, with multiple courts and new facilities, would give the Panthers the opportunity to recruit more players and members.

“It gives us the facilities to bring in more players.

“We’ve had to stop taking players but now we can start to build those memberships and it gives kids especially the chance to join us.

South Adelaide Rugby League Club president was also excited by his club’s new home.

“It’s fantastic – sport is about community and this is really inclusive for everyone.”

“We’ve got players coming from all over the country from our 1978 and 80 premierships to have a look, that’s how enthused we are,”

“When I first started with the club 30-odd years ago we had one room and one shower, so it’s something we’ve been working toward for a long time.”

Open day activities start at 10am with multiple sporting games, followed by cultural art and fitness activities, an opening ceremony and come-and-try sessions for various sports.
