South Australians will come together in November to support children in Ukraine who have been left without adequate school buildings.

The Advertiser Foundation and The Hurley Group will join forces to support Association of Ukrainians in South Australia Inc member Diane Howarth in raising money for the Rebuilding Schools Ukraine campaign.

Ms Howarth, 70, who was a schoolteacher for 34 years and continues to teach displaced Ukranians English, said she was inspired to start the fundraiser because of her passion for education.

“It’s about my passion for education and children,” she said.

“They’re enduring things they shouldn’t have to.”

Ms Howarth, of Seacliff Park, said it was when the “emotions built up” she realised she had to do something.

“(The Russians) have destroyed over 300 schools,” she said.

“My heart goes out to the teachers and students … education is very important to Ukrainians.”

Ms Howarth said she feels ”hopeful” that the luncheon, hosted at The Arkaba Hotel, will see lots of money raised.

“We are hoping to build a single school but more depending on funds,” she said.

“We will have to be careful not to build something that is likely to be destroyed again.

“We will make sure that we will build when the time is right.”

The luncheon, which will be hosted by radio breakfast host Ali Clarke, will consist of a three-course meal, drinks package and Ukrainian entertainment.

Tickets for the November 3 event are on sale now for $140pp, with 100 per cent of proceeds going toward the rebuilding schools fund.
