A major South Australian pub and hotel operator has gone bust.

Entertainment Venues Australia - which operated the Royal Terrace Hotel at Kent Town, The Glenelg Pier Hotel, Propoganda Club in the city, the Links Lady Bay Hotel and the Brougham Adelaide at North Adelaide - has been placed in liquidation.

It comes just hours after The Advertiser revealed the Royal and the Pier - which does not include the Oaks apartments - had been placed in a trading halt.

A sign was placed on the door of Kent Town’s The Royal Terrace Hotel last Friday stating “due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be opening today”.

The pub, which reopened in February, did not trade over the weekend and remained closed today. The sign was still affixed to the front door.

Phone calls to the venue were met with the recorded message: “That mailbox is full.”

Visitors to the Glenelg Pier Hotel were also greeted with a sign affixed to the window stating that the esplanade business - which includes a bar, restaurants and function centre - was “temporarily closed for today”.

The Pier is a popular venue for wedding receptions.

The Royal and Pier Hotel businesses - which does not include the Oaks apartments - were bought by hospitality group Entertainment Venues Australia last year, after their previous operator went broke.

Entertainment Venues Australia director Elli Cakar has been contacted for comment. Duncan Powell has been appointed liquidator.

The Brougham Adelaide was also closed yesterday and telephone calls went to messagebank.

Consumer and Business Services licence details show that the O’Connell Street venue’s gaming and liquor licences have been suspended until November 21, 2019.

The property’s landlord Oberdan Nominees has also taken possession of the licenses, according to the CBS database.

The paper has previously reported that Mr Cakar’s company, which was incorporated in 2018, has been at the centre of legal claims for unpaid bills.

Mr Cakar has appealed against a Federal Court ruling last month ordering the winding up of his separate development company Living Australia on the grounds it is insolvent.

The winding up order came after multiple creditors joined an action by business consultant Phil Ransome to close down Mr Cakar’s firm over a disputed $25,000 consultancy bill.

The appeal is scheduled for September 13 before Justice Richard White.

The Advertiser revealed in April that Mr Cakar had tried to transform an entire residential block in Thorngate, in Adelaide’s inner-northern suburbs, into a $1.4 billion metropolis.
