Residents of Glenhuntley Street in Woodville South are putting speeding hoons on notice — filing a petition to council about it.
At this week’s Charles Sturt meeting, council received a petition containing 44 signatures from Steve Russell, on behalf of the neighbours of Glenhuntley Street.
The petition requests that council investigate alternate traffic management options, due to an increase in vehicles using the street at high speeds, particularly as a cut through route between Port, Woodville and Findon roads.
In his written submission, Mr Russell said that when discussing the issue with his neighbours in recent months, the need for better traffic management in Glenhuntley Street appeared to be escalating.
“The volume of ‘nonresident’ cars using Glenhuntley Street appears to be increasing in volume and the speeds each vehicle is travelling also appear to be increasing,” he said.
“This is causing concern and frustration among residents who reside in Glenhuntley Street.”
Mr Russell said the petition showed “overwhelming” support for further action, including installing devices – such as speed humps – to control and lower speeds and deter nonresidents using the street as a “cut-through”.
“It has been observed that Glenhuntley is used as a detour for motorists travelling from surrounding suburbs to the city, mainly during peak times weekdays, but also at weekends,” he said.
“It is a weekly occurrence viewing cars travelling in excess of 60-70km/h. This issue is compounded and is very dangerous when parking on both sides is realised when the football season is in progress.”
The current speed limit on the street is 40km/h.
Mr Russell said the majority of residents were in favour of the installation of flat top speed humps along Glenhuntley Street.
Council agreed that the petition be received and referred to its asset management committee meeting on November 16, presenting the outcomes of traffic investigations, along with recommended actions.
