Grieving loved ones of a Port Lincoln fisherman who died after sustaining serious injuries in a boating accident have launched a fundraiser to financially help the family.

Darren Monaghan suffered serious facial injuries after he was hit in the head with a boat winch late last year.

He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital but later died.

Port Lincoln woman Cate Johnson created the GoFundMe for help out “Darren’s beautiful family”

“Toni, his three children and granddaughter lost Darren in a tragic workplace accident in the maritime industry where he was a well respected and regarded worker and person amongst his co-workers and a highly valued employee,” she said.

“These type of sudden tragic accidents impact the families and community in many ways so if we could all reach into our hearts and help Darren’s family in whatever way possible it would help ease the pain of Darren’s loss and give his family the support we’d all hope to receive if needed from our community.

“We will miss you mate. Wherever you are be in peace.”

More than $4500 has been raised so far of the $40,000 goal.

An obituary to Mr Monaghan said his death had “left his family and community mourning the loss of a kind and devoted individual”.

“Darren Monaghan, a beloved family member and friend, tragically lost his life in a devastating boat accident,” Prestwood Funeral Home wrote.

“Darren’s sudden departure has left a significant void in the lives of his loved ones, and tributes have poured in from all over the community.

“Friends and family are coming together to offer their support, with donations being made to help ease the family’s burden.”

Last month, SafeWork SA said it was investigating the incident.

Earlier, Australian Maritime and Fisheries Academy head Bob Miller said working on the water was “a very dangerous place to be” and called for more training.

The incident caps was among several dangerous incidents faced by SA fishermen last year, which included the death of a popular Elliston fisherman who was killed in boating accident on the Eyre Peninsula.
