Grandaughter, mum and grandma made history on the netball court as three generations of Lock Roos took on the Cummins Kapinnie Cougars.
Lili Tiller (13), Sally Potter (30) and Joz Phelps (50) all fronted in the Roos’ greens, a first for the Lock Football/Netball Club, the trio giving members and spectators of both sides a chance to witness something rarely seen in SA sport.
Sally said the opportunity to experience something special arose when the side failed to make finals the previous week.
“It was something I joked about to mum (Joz) earlier in the season and she laughed at me about it, but after we failed to make finals I thought why not try to get three generations out there and have some fun,” Sally said.
“I was quite overwhelmed with all the excitement and encouragement from both sides – Lock and Cummins Kapinnie.”
It was a tough game for the Roos, who went behind early and eventually lost out to a strong Cougars team.
Despite the loss though, the game was something the three generations of family will never forget.
“It was a moment I will undoubtedly remember forever,” Joz said.
“I was really excited, especially because I was able to play a game with my grandmother,” Lili added.
“How many other kids can say that?”
Joz previously hadn’t played for 12 years but still had an impact as goal shooter, consistently linking up with Sally in goal attack and Lili in wing attack.
“I’m so proud of her for suiting up and playing,” Sally said.
“She’s my best friend and I’m not sure how to explain how amazing the game felt for me.”
The three Roos also made sure to give thanks to their club for the support they both showed in making the moment possible.
“I love Lock Football/Netball Club for its family mentality and the support they show and I know this opportunity may not have been possible at a different club,” Sally said.
“I love playing with Lock because I get to learn from amazing netballers and I get the chance to try new things like playing with my mother and grandmother,” Lili added.
