A teenager performed a dangerous dirt bike stunt before speeding off from police and leading them on a street pursuit, a court has heard.

Man allegedly performs high risk bike stunts

A teenager showed little regard for road rules when he performed a mono in front of authorities before leading a police pursuit through the streets of Port Lincoln, a court has heard.

Hamish Meaney, 19, appeared in the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court last month pleading guilty to multiple driving offences.

Police prosecutor Mick Hart alleged Meaney drove without due care on London St in Port Lincoln unknowingly in police presence on October 15, 2020.

Patrol officers witnessed the dare devil perform a mono on his dirt bike, activating sirens and lights in an attempt to pull him over but Meaney “appeared to realise” and instead accelerated up to double the speed limit, the court heard.

Sgt Hart said he was pursued for some time through Hindmarsh Street, Kent Pl and Queen St before police lost sight of the offender.

Inquiries later identified the dirt bike as Meaney’s who admitted to the offences saying he had reached speeds of up 100km/h at the time of the incident.

Meaney’s defence lawyer Rino Zollo told the court “the explanation he has provided police is as good as it’s going to get”.

“It was a stupid decision and he is so lucky that he didn’t injure himself or someone else and hopefully he’s learned his lesson.”

The court heard Meaney had since sold the dirt bike at the centre of the offending after he was thrown off it in a separate incident and broke his arm.

Magistrate Karim Soetratma labelled Meaney’s act as “stupid”.

“You might not feel lucky right now but you got so lucky that no one stepped in your way, no body drove anywhere you could hit them,” Magistrate Soetrama said.

“You could have killed somebody.”

While the offences he was initially charged with carried jail terms, Magistrate Soetratma said Meaney was lucky to have had his charges downgraded.

“There’s not really much more you could have said, bearing in mind how stupid the offence was,” he said.

“You have been very fortunate to have a lawyer working with you who has negotiated very good outcomes for you.”

Recording a conviction for failing to stop when required and driving at dangerous speeds, Magistrate Soetratma fined Meaney $300 and warned him against reoffending “because the outcome will be very different”.
