It’s your last chance to have your say about council’s proposed community reserve redevelopment for Whait Reserve.

The park was identified as a priority in the councils open space strategy 2021-2026 draft with a plan to enhance the playground to at least a ‘neighbourhood level.’

Port Lincoln Council obtained the reserve from the Whait family in 1948 and has undergone some restoration over the past 10 years.

Council has engaged local husband and wife Damien McQuillan and Uta Enneking McQuillan of E+MQ DESIGN to develop the plan which will build on existing improvements and can be delivered over coming years.

Mr McQuillan, an architect, said he grew up two blocks away from Whait Reserve and use to play there as a child.

The Tennant St project was allocated $325,000 from the councils budget with hopes that additional matched funding will be provided by state government through its Open Spaces and Places for People Grants program.

The two-phase plan offers a range of facilities including two small ovals, soccer nets, basketball court, nature playground, walking trails and paths, new toilets, fencing, lighting upgrades, barbecues, public art, and landscaping and is seeking response in relation to the proposal through the councils your say portal online.

Mayor Brad Flaherty emphasises the importance of community input for such projects as it assists in shaping future improvements.

“We want people to get their hands dirty, particularly young people, to build community pride and ownership of what will be a fantastic reserve,” Cr Flaherty said.

Phase one includes constructing new infrastructure, while phase two will provide opportunities for the community and schools to deliver smaller elements, such as tree plantings, art and mural projects, and minor equipment.

Council hopes to have phase one of the project delivered by the end of the financial year, pending government funding.

It also committed to delivering part of the project, specifically a toilet, security lighting and footpaths, regardless of state government assistance.

Community members, residents and any one who has feedback on the reserve development is urged to jump on line and submit their feedback before 5pm Thursday, September 23 via https://yoursay.portlincoln.sa.gov.au/whait-reserve.
